Prediction, Odds & Betting tips for Portugal vs. Switzerland | Group Stage, World Cup Qatar 2022
Portugal and Switzerland played just a few months ago in the UEFA Nations League, and we saw quite interesting matchups back then. We expect nothing less this time, as the stake in this one is much more significant and there is no second chance here. Portugal and Ronaldo won the top place in their group, while the Swiss team managed to advance to the knockout stage, following a massive battle with Serbia in the final round of their group.
Portugal
Beating Ghana 3-2 and Uruguay 2-0 secured the place in the Round of 16 for the European Selecao, and after that, they lost the final matchup in the group, to South Korea, 2-1, conceding a goal in the stoppage time. Now, if we were to be politically correct here, we would say this didn’t happen to push Uruguay outside the tournament. Though, we are not, and there are certain doubts about that.
Fernando Santos has problems with injured players in the back line with Danilo and Nuno Mendes having certain issues. The first is ruled out until the end of the tournament.
But on the other side, the offense is doing well for Portugal, with Bruno Fernandes scoring three goals already and dominating the pitch in each event. This team has a very powerful midfield, that controls the rhythm and pace of the contest.
Switzerland
The Swiss side beat Serbia 3-2, and despite Cameroon beating Brazil 1-0, survived. This unit previously defeated Cameroon 1-0 and lost to Brazil with the same result, so it all came down to the game against the Serbs.
We saw a lot of flaws in the Swiss defense, yet on the other side, their attack used the fact that Serbia has very weak protection on the flanks, trashing the rivals and packing three goals in their net.
On top of that, they showed an incredible mentality, coming back from a minus, and all that following a huge blow, with them losing the lead first. This unit is very experienced and it plays together for a long time.
Portugal: Costa; Cancelo, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro; Neves, Carvalho, Fernandes; B. Silva, Ronaldo, Leao
Switzerland: Sommer; Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodriguez; Xhaka, Freuler; Shaqiri, Sow, Vargas; Embolo
The two sides were in the UNL group stage together this summer and the record is even, with these two units splitting a win each – Portugal at home, 4-0, and Switzerland on its soil, 1-0.
This will be an interesting game to watch. We are giving a slight edge to Portugal, who will win it, because of the overall form and better quality in all areas of the field.
Our verdict: Portugal wins
