Prediction, Odds & Betting Tips for Austria vs. France at EURO 2024
Austria has a huge challenge coming up at the 2024 EURO opener, with them playing against France, who is the top rival for the European crown, according to a majority of experts. Even though they play well, the Austrian unit is a massive underdog here, and how wouldn’t it be with Mbappe and all the other superstars being on the opposite side of the field.
Austria
Die Burschen, or the Boys as they are called back home, haven’t lost since October last year and have only one defeat over the previous 16 events, which is an excellent streak for this unit. Let us remind you that Austria didn’t play well in the 2022 UEFA Nations League and that they missed the World Cup in Qatar.
Until a tie against Switzerland, we saw them triumphing in six consecutive matches. some of their victims were Germany, Serbia, Turkey and Slovakia, and that needs to be respected.
The offense is working almost perfectly, netting two or more goals in the majority of cases. Meanwhile, in those 16 matches we mentioned, the back line and the goalkeeper provided seven clean sheets, which also deserves credit.
France
The Gauls aren’t that motivated to play qualifications or friendly games, and overall, they aren’t showing 100% of their power in those meetings. Deschamp’s unit turns up only on the big stage, and EURO most definitely is one.
They did lose to Germany in March this year, 0-2 at home, but it was obvious that most of the players didn’t have the motivation to play that one. After that, the Gauls beat Chile 3-2 and Luxembourg 3-0 and played without goals against a tough and solid Canadian national team.
Needless to say, their team is maybe the most complete of all in Germany, and above everything else, they know one another very well, due to years of playing together. Their attack has enormous pace, with Dembele, Mbappe, Thuram and Griezmann, and it will be interesting to see it against the fluid Austrian midfield.
Austria: Pentz; Lainer, Lienhart, Wober, Prass; Seiwald, Laimer; Wimmer, Weimann, Schmid; Gregoritsch
France: Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Konate, Hernandez; Rabiot, Kante; Dembele, Griezmann, Mbappe; Thuram
Austria and France played in the 2022 UEFA Nations League, where Austria managed to keep a tie at home 1-1, but then lost in Paris, 2-0. Their last victory over the Gauls was in 2008 World Cup qualifiers, 3-1 in Vienna.
Even though Austria plays good football and their morale is high, we have to go with France here, because of their individual quality and unreal star power in the attack. That’s the only reason why we pick the Gauls over the Boys.
Our verdict: France wins
