The preview, odds, and betting prediction for UEFA Champions League game Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester United.
When: Wednesday, February 23
Where: Wanda Metropolitan, Madrid
Atletico Madrid and Manchester United meet on Wednesday night at Wanda Metropolitan. This contest should be one of the most interesting this week, as it brings together two sides that aren’t posting consistent results and who need to win this matchup to settle down already frustrated fans.
Atletico Madrid
The Mattress Makers enter this clash following a strong win on the road in Osasuna, 0-3. It was a perfect rebound following a nasty defeat at home to one of the weakest teams in the league, Levante. Diego Simeone’s unit has subsequent losses and wins in the past six events, and this streak is the best display of their performances in the 2021/22 season.
The La Liga champions don’t have any consistency in their game, and what is very strange, have problems with the defense. Atletico has only one clean sheet in the past eight contests. We all got used to seeing the team from Madrid having one of the best, if not the best, defense in Europe.
Four of the last five events they had ended with three or more scores. Meanwhile, Suarez and the boys upfront netted twice in all of those events.
Manchester United
The Red Devils won 2-4 in Leeds, once again bringing anxiety upon their fans. The team from Old Trafford had a 0-2 lead but allowed the hosts to come back before scoring two more goals to secure a victory. It seems that United can’t do anything this season without complications.
Like Atletico, Manchester has problems with the defensive line. In seven of the last 10 games across all the competitions, the Red Devils allowed at least one goal. The good news is that the offense works well, so the forwards usually cover up all the mistakes in the back.
United has only one loss on the road in the past nine games, but on the other side, posted just four wins, with five draws. It isn’t a bad score overall, but to be honest, it isn’t shiny either.
Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Llorente, Gimenez, Savic, Reinildo; De Paul, Koke, Kondogbia, Felix; Correa, Cunha
Manchester United: De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Pogba; Sancho, Fernandes, Rashford; Ronaldo
We didn’t find any matches between these two sides other than two in the Cup Winners’ Cup, way back in 1992. Atletico was better at home 3-0, and the game in England saw a 1-1 draw.
As you can see, the respective defenses are struggling to provide consistency and aren’t playing well at all. That is the reason why we expect to see goals on both sides. Neither Atletico nor Man Utd have problems with scoring, as their attackers almost always deliver, and that forces us to go with this pick.
Our verdict: Both teams to score
