Belgium meets Portugal in the matchup that many consider being the derby of the EURO 2020 Round of 16. These two sides have fantastic individuals and are at the very top of European football for quite some time. Portugal is the reigning European champion and the current UEFA Nations League champion as well. Unlike them, the Belgians didn’t win anything yet but are the first team in the FIFA rankings, and that tells a lot about their fantastic potential and the quality of this side.
The Red Devils are one of the best offensive teams in the last couple of years. Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazards, and several other world-class players can penetrate throughout any defense in the world. De Bruyne’s impact was obvious against Denmark once he entered the pitch against Denmark. In just a few minutes, he demonstrated why many believe he is the best player in the world.
Belgium had nine points in the group stage, scoring at least two goals in each game and allowing one against Denmark. Roberto Martinez didn’t have any problems with injuries or suspensions, which is a big boost for this unit with multiple setbacks over the past year or two.
Hazard and Witsel are now ready to roll for all 90 minutes, which wasn’t the case for the past few months, and when these two guys play with 100%, the rivals are in one hell of a trouble.
Selecao didn’t shine in the opening three matches, but they weren’t that bad as well. A loss against Germany left the biggest impression, while on the other side quite the solid performance in the last match of the group against the world champions, France, 2-2 went unnoticed.
Cristiano Ronaldo is breaking the limits again, with the fantastic striker already having five goals in three matches, two more than all other players at the tournament.
When mentioning goals, there is one very interesting fact here. Portugal allowed six of them, which is more than they did in seven events preceding the tournament.
Belgium: Courtois; Alderweireld, Boyata, Vertonghen; Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, T Hazard; E Hazard, Lukaku, De Bruyne
Portugal :Patricio; Semedo, Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro; Moutinho, Danilo, Sanches; Bernardo, Ronaldo, Jota
We haven’t seen any competitive H2H matches between these two sides recently. In 2018 was one friendly international, and it ended 0-0.
With all due respect to Ronaldo and his teammates, Belgium appears to be in better shape right now. They wouldn’t be favorites for nothing. The biggest reason for backing up their win is Portugal’s defense, which is a bit shaky in recent times, and that isn’t good at all once you have to face such an atomic attack like Belgium’s. That is why we suggest betting on the Red Devils. The odds are great, by the way.
