Prediction, Odds & Betting tips for France vs. Australia | Group Stage, World Cup Qatar 2022
France is the biggest favorite for the World Cup title, and they open the tournament against Australia. This is a clash between Goliath and David, but as we have seen so many times in the past, David is capable of beating the stronger opponent. France has some problems with injuries, yet that doesn’t change the objective of the reigning World Cup champs, and that is title defense. On the other side is Australia, which isn’t as strong as before and presents a mediocre team compared to the one ten, or fifteen years ago.
France
The Gauls are, according to the bookies, the top favorite to win the trophy alongside Brazil. The only difference-maker between them and Selecao for the moment is the fact that they have more significant absentees. Pogba and Kante are two of the elite midfielders, and their contribution and impact are incredible. We saw that in Russia four years ago.
France didn’t play with full power during the UEFA Nations League, and that’s why they ended up barely above Austria, who was later relegated. Six games with only one win, two draws, and three defeats with a 5-7 goal difference is pretty bad for the champs.
Though Deschamps didn’t want to see his players picking up injuries and he wasn’t willing to risk anything. National team games were a relaxation for his players.
Australia
We need to say that this might be the worst Socceroos’ team in the last two decades. Yes, they reached the World Cup, but we weren’t impressed with how this unit played. Furthermore, in some situations, we wondered how they ended up in Qatar.
The Aussies eliminated Peru in the playoffs following one very dull and boring goalless draw. After that, luck was on their side during the penalties, and the Socceroos secured their ticket to the World Cup.
They have five wins in a row now but don’t be fulled by that. Apart from the event with Peru, no other had a competitive meaning. Them losing to Saudi Arabia and failing to beat Oman or China on the road are a true measure of this crew.
France: Maignan; Pavard, Kounde, Varane, Mendy; Guendouzi, Tchouameni, Camavinga; Nkunku; Mbappe, Giroud
Australia: Ryan; Atkinson, Sainsbury, Wright, Behich; Mooy; Rogic, Irvine, Leckie; Hrustic, Maclaren
These nations met in Russia, also in the group stage, and France got away with a narrow, 2-1 win which took place due to Behich’s late own goal. The Socceroos had put up a very good resistance back then.
The French team is better than mediocre Australia, and we think there won’t be any trouble for Mbappe and the crew to take down the rivals.
Our Verdict: France to win
