The new power in the English Premier League, Newcastle, comes to town, riding a massive swing following an excellent performance in the opening round. We might see these two teams battling for the title this year, and even though the Magpies didn’t announce their ambitions publicly, the are among the best teams in the Premiership.

The Citizens have a big rotation, and their players got used to playing on a tight schedule, so a trip to Greece won’t leave too many consequences to the team’s energy bar. But, Kevin de Bruyne’s absence might cause some issues. It seems that the Belgian didn’t heal his hamstring properly, which he re-injured against Burnley. He now faces another pause.

That would be fine for Guardiola if he had Ilkay Gundogan, but the German left the team. Mateo Kovacic now needs to learn fast, because most of the midfield tasks would fall in his lap now.

A big plus for the Citizens is the fact that Haaland looks good. The Norwegian can cover up all the problems in the offense, because of his unreal individual attributes.

Newcastle

Eddie Howe’s boys began the season with a blast against Aston Villa, beating one of their direct rivals for the top-four place 5-1. It was one of the best performances the Magpies had under this manager.

Counting in the preseason, this was the eighth consecutive event for Newcastle in which they haven’t lost, winning six times and having two draws, one of them against Villa. Howe’s crew has been extremely efficient throughout this stretch, netting at least twice in each but one contest.

All the lines in the team are working great. The defense still needs to improve to reach last year’s standards, but overall, they look well too.
