Prediction, Odds & Betting tips for Newcastle vs. Manchester City at Premier League.
Two of the wealthiest clubs in the world in terms of their owners and their financial status, Newcastle and Manchester City, play on Sunday afternoon. However, the disparity on the field is more than obvious because Man City has a much more expensive team than the Magpies, who apparently began to build their empire much less flashy than the Citizens did in their time. The contest at St. James’ Park will be the main event of Sunday’s program.
Newcastle
The Magpies are undefeated in the opening two games, having four points. They won at home in the season opener against Nottingham Forrest, 2-0, and then played without goals in Brighton against the Seagulls.
As you can see, their main virtue for the moment is defense, as they have 180 minutes without a goal conceded. That is Eddie Howe’s signature all over the place, with lots of running and hard pressure on the rivals. Against the Seagulls, Newcastle wasn’t too keen on attacking but waited for the rival’s mistake to strike from the counter-attack.
When Magpies play at home, the situation is different, and they are much more aggressive, setting the tempo and the pace, often attacking throughout the entire 90 minutes. Of course, that might not be possible against City, but be sure that Howe’s boys won’t back down.
Manchester City
Guardiola’s machinery also didn’t allow goals in the opening pair of events. They would beat West Ham on the road, 0-2, and then roll over Howe’s former team, Bournemouth, at the Etihad, 4-0. Everything was solved in the first half, with the champions leading 3-0 at the break.
One by one, Gundogan, De Bruyne, and Foden scored between the 19th and the 37th minute. It was a classic Man City blitz, with the rivals experiencing a stunning knockout without even knowing what hit them.
Since the start of the preseason, Man City has only one loss, to Liverpool in the Community Shield, 1-3, and in all other games, they would post victories. Guardiola has most of his players at his disposal, therefore, he has nothing to worry about here.
Newcastle: Pope; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Targett; Willock, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Wilson, Saint-Maximin
Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Stones, Cancelo; Gundogan, Rodri, De Bruyne; Foden, Haaland, Grealish
Man City was ruthless towards Newcastle last year, winning 9-0 combined in both EPL games. The first game at St. James’ Park was 0-4 for the Citizens and the second at the Etihad, 5-0.
This will be a true test for both sides. Newcastle will have the chance to see where they sit at the moment, while City has to face a very tough rival. Despite all that, we are picking the Citizens to win here, even though the odds aren’t breathtaking. Haaland and the boys have the power to break Newcastle’s defense, which can’t be said for the other way around.
Our verdict: Man City wins
