Prediction, Odds & Betting tips for Portugal vs. Uruguay | Group Stage, World Cup Qatar 2022
The derby of group H is the one between Portugal and Uruguay. These are the two most sounding teams in the assembly with the biggest stars and the most expensive rosters. So it is no wonder why everyone awaits to see this clash. Portugal has three points from the win over Ghana, while Uruguay didn’t start as planned, taking only one point from their contest against South Korea. So a victory here would be very beneficial for the South American crew. Portugal would pretty much secure the top spot in the assembly with a triumph, meaning that we should witness a good game.
Portugal
The European Selecao won three of the past four, scoring 10 goals throughout these events, showing that the attack is in decent form. Apart from losing to Spain in the UEFA Nations League when Ronaldo and the boys couldn’t net a goal in all three wins, Portugal netted at least three times.
Ghana was a decent adversary, and with a bit of luck, they could have scored that third goal in the last moments and leveled the score. Ronaldo, Felix, and Leao all delivered, though, the defense was a bit shaky, with all the players having a few mistakes.
This isn’t the Portugal from a few years ago that plays chess and positional game relying upon Ronaldo upfront, as this particular unit is much more versatile and fluid in the midfield. That’s why we often see them conceding.
Uruguay
The two-time world champs didn’t impress anyone against Korea. We’ve expected to see more from them, and to be honest, Nunez disappointed us the most. Liverpool’s striker is completely out of rhythm, and the sole dead chance in the match that opened to him was wasted due to his disastrous reaction.
The midfield was trying to slow down the Koreans, but we couldn’t get rid of the impression that the Uruguayans were the ones who were inferior on the pitch.
If it is of any consolation for this crew, at least they saved the net for the second game in a row. That comes in handy in times like these when you need to find a bright spot in your performance.
Portugal: Costa; Cancelo, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro; Neves, Carvalho, Fernandes; B. Silva, Ronaldo, Leao
Uruguay: Rochet; Varela, Godin, Gimenez, Olivera; Bentancur, Vecino, Valverde; De Arrascaeta, L Suarez, Nunez
Four years ago, these two sides met in the round of 16 at the World Cup in Russia, and the Uruguayans eliminated the European champions at the time. The result was 2-1 for the South American crew, with Cavani scoring both goals, while Pepe netted for the Portuguese unit.
The game will be tough and heavy, and we don’t expect to see too many goals, because both teams will be careful and very defensive-oriented.
Our verdict: Under 2.5 goals
