Prediction, Odds & Betting tips for Vettori vs. Cannonier at UFC on ESPN 47
The battle between two hard-hitting middleweights, Marvin Vettori and Jared Cannonier, is something many MMA fans desired over the past few years. Two massive guys for this division, who already had a shot at the title, clash in search of another opportunity to attack the belt. Vettori is one of the few guys who went toe-to-toe with Israel Adesanya, while on the other side, Cannonier’s path towards the current status was more than interesting, with him going down the divisions over the years.
Marvin Vettori
The Italian Dream is one very tough guy whose physique is astonishing. Vettori’s size and frame are compelling and, at the same time, his biggest weapon. Though, he isn’t using it often enough. Vettori’s ground game is well-rounded, but the Italian isn’t taking the business down to the ground often enough.
Instead, he loves to compete in stand-up and try to break rivals with his fists. And honestly, this guy maybe isn’t knocking out opponents like some other fighters, but he knows how to hurt them. His chin is able to take on a hit from a Ford Escort, and for sure, it is the strongest in the division.
Vettori fought Adesanya twice, losing both times via decision, the first time, probably being robbed of a win. He has 19 wins, six losses (all via decision), and one draw. He is coming off a win over Roman Dolidze after losing to Robert Whittaker before.
Jared Cannonier
The Killa Gorilla used to be a heavyweight, then a light heavyweight, before settling in the middleweight division. Now, he did lose extra pounds in the process, but his punch stayed the same, and there is e legit debate about the fact that he might be the strongest hitter in the division.
Cannonier’s game is not versatile at all. He searches for that one punch that will probably knock out the rival, and of his 16 victories, 10 came via KO. When looking at the CV, Cannonier defeated some notable names in the UFC, Anderson Silva for a start, Jack Hermansson, Kelvin Gastelu, Drek Brunson, the most recently, Sean Strickland, but in our opinion, that split decision was a clear robbery.
Cannonier’s problem is cardio, and he often gases out in the final rounds, where rivals collect points. Though, even in those moments, one precise punch he throws sends the opposition to the ground.
Opposite to Cannonier, the Italian Dream has very solid cardio, despite his mass and size. We’ve seen him pushing to five rounds pretty often, which happened against guys who are very good, like Paulo Costa, Kevin Holland, or Adesanya. On the other side, he might be slower a little bit, which leaves the door open for Cannonier to deliver that one hit, but Vettori’s chin is rock solid. Our pick here will be Vettori to win due to his cardio and his better tactics.
Our verdict: Marvin Vettori wins
