Prediction, Odds & Betting tips for the Manchester City vs Liverpool in the English Premier League.
The biggest game of the season in the English Premier League takes place this Sunday at Etihad Stadium. Manchester City hosts Liverpool in the clash that could decide this year’s champions. Liverpool is one point behind the Citizens, but they are in better shape than the Citizens when looking at the overall situation. Still, that doesn’t have to mean anything because the matches like these are often decided with one small mistake.
Manchester City
After a very tough battle at Etihad, the Citizens defeated Atletico Madrid this Tuesday night. They eventually found the crack in the guests’ bunker, but they had to dig deep to break Simeone’s defense. This was the third win in a row for the English champs, which suggests that they are slowly improving their form.
What is also important is the fact that they allowed just one goal in the past five events. Despite what many think, the defense is the key to Man City’s successes over the past few years, not the offense.
Though, we need to add that the attackers are doing a solid job, but that they aren’t anywhere near their full potential. Against L’Pool, this needs to change; otherwise, the title could slip away.
Liverpool
The Reds have 17 wins and one loss in the past 18 events. That sole failure was against Inter in the second leg of the UCL round of 16, but it did not affect Liverpool’s advantage in the quarterfinals. They would beat Benfica 1-3 on Tuesday, which was the fourth time in the past five contests across all the competitions to see L’pool netting at least twice.
Like Man City, their defense is at the top level right now, posting seven clean sheets during that stretch. We need to mention Virgil Van Dijk, who is simply unbeatable in the backline.
When looking only at the games on the road, Liverpool has eight consecutive victories, conceding in just two of them, and that perfectly summarizes all the above-written concerning defense.
Man City: Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Stones, Zinchenko; Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Foden, Sterling
Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Mane, Diaz
The first meeting this year took place at Anfield on October 3. That game ended 2-2, with all four goals taking place in the second half. Liverpool had the lead twice, but the guests managed to come back. Mane and Salah scored for the hosts, while Foden and De Bryne netted for the home team.
Even though we wrote about the defenses in the preview, high efficiency is something that we expect to see here. As soon as one side scores, and that will happen sooner or later, the other will have to open and neglect the defense. Such a scenario is bound to bring some goals, which we already saw in the first clash at Anfield. Therefore, Over 2.5 goals is our pick here.
Our verdict: Over 2.5 goals
