Where: UFC Apex, Las Vegas, Nevada

Derrick Lewis and Chris Daukaus clash in the battle of two hard-hitting heavyweights. The Blacks Beast is ahead one very tough matchup against the rising fighter from Philadelphia and the person who has an equally impressive resume behind him. Lewis needs a win here, to stay among the top contenders for the UFC heavyweight belt, while on the other side, Daukaus has the same ambitions. Given the background of these two guys, this should be a very interesting matchup, which will probably end via KO.

Preview

Derrick Lewis

The Black Beast holds a record of 25 wins, five losses, and one no contest. He defeated the rivals via KO 20 times and has the most knockouts in the UFC heavyweight history, 12. His punching power is unreal, and many believe that he is the only fighter with stronger hits than Francis Ngannou.

However, he never won the heavyweight belt. Lewis was once defeated by Daniel Cormier, and the second time he suffered a loss to Ciryl Gane, who was better at the UFC 265 held this August. It was the last bout for the American, who previously had four wins in a row, against Blagoy Ivanov, Ilir Latifi, Aleksei Oleinik, and Curts Blaydes.

Lewis’s main problem is that his cardio and energy bar aren’t that extensive. Therefore, the further the bout goes, the lesser are his chances to win. Lewis is also very slow in the octagon, and he can’t properly defend against smarter rivals. We saw that against Gane, who was slowly chopping Lewis until he exploded at one point and finished the contest.

Chris Daukaus

The Philly-native is relatively a new fighter in the organization, joining the UFC a year ago, once he had his first fight. It was against Parker Porter at the UFC 252 on August 15, 2020, and that bout finished in the first round, with Daukaus smashing his opponent. The same happened in the following two events, against Rodrigo Nascimento and Aleksei Oleinik.

This September, Daukaus had the toughest possible rival, Shamil Abdurakimov, whom he defeated via TKO, but in the second round. Still, that too is impressive we need to add. A win over the veteran earned Daukaus No.7 spot in the heavyweight, meaning that a match against Lewis might be crucial for his future. Reaching such a high seed after only four bouts signalizes that Daukaus might easily end up in some title-eliminator if he takes down Lewis.

Like Lewis, his main weapon is fists of steel, with all but one of his triumphs coming via KO. The majority were in the opening round. The difference is that Daukaus has a much higher output than Lewis, but that might be because his fights lasted shorter and the opponents weren’t any of the elite names.

Lewis vs. Daukaus Prediction

Daukaus might be quicker and faster, and many believe that he has the advantage over Lewis, even though the bookmakers think otherwise. But we’ve noticed something that will probably be a difference-maker in this event – overexposure. Once he starts attacking, Daukaus stance is too wide, which is a gift for an experienced fighter like Lewis. One punch will be enough for him to solve the bout.

Our verdict: Lewis win
