UFC 269 is the last and arguably the most interesting mixed martial arts event this year. Why? Because it brings two title matches, one of them for the lightweight division between the champion, Charles Oliveira, and the former challenger and interim champion, Dustin Poirier. This bout is also the headliner of the entire spectacle.

Preview

Charles Oliveira

The Brazilian who won the title against Michael Chandler back in May didn’t enter the octagon ever since. He is currently riding a nine-win streak, during which he defeated Kevin Lee, Tony Ferguson, Clay Guida, etc. Even though he started the UFC stint pretty slowly, as time went by, Oliveira became one of the best, if not the best, submission artists in the division.

Also, he holds the record for most finishes in the organization, with 17 at the moment. Fourteen of them were via submission, which is also a UFC record. We didn’t mention that Oliveira has a professional record of 31 wins and 8 losses, which is impressive as well, given the talent in the division he competed.

There aren’t too many fighters in the UFC with such a gift for finishing their rivals on the mat. Though, we mustn’t forget his punching skills, as he defeated one of arguably the best hard-hitters in the division, Michael Chandler, via TKO.

Dustin Poirier

When mentioning hard-hitters, Dustin Poirier is one of them. The Diamond is arguably the most exciting guy for watching in this division, and he proves that each time when stepping inside the octagon. Over the past 10 events, he has just one loss, and that was against Khabib Nurmagoedov at the UFC 242.

However, he would bounce back after that pretty quickly, with three wins in a row, over Dan Hooker, and twice vs. Connor McGregor. Poirier has a highly impressive bio and, among others, holds wins over Max Holloway, twice, Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje.

Even though he prefers to fight in the stand-up, Poirier knows how to control the fight on the ground as well, because of his impressive power and size, and super cardio, which is arguably the best in the lightweight category. Hooks and jabs are his main weapons, but from time to time, Poirier knows to get lost in exchanges leaving himself open.

Oliveira vs. Poirier Prediction

According to the bookmakers, Poirier is a slight favorite, and we believe that it is mostly due to his much flashier background than Oliveira’s. After all, he does come in this event with back-to-back wins over Conor. If he manages to keep the fight on the feet, the prospects for finally winning the belt are pretty high.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian is dominant on the ground, and at the moment, nobody can confront him in that aspect of the battle. He is just way too versatile with his technique.

A lot will depend on Poirier’s takedown defense. Only due to his raw power, we give the Diamond an edge, because we don’t think Oliveira can manipulate Poirier’s body like with some other opponents he previously met. Dustin is way more powerful than any of the champion’s previous rivals.

Our verdict: Poirier Win
